![]() Generalising a little, much postmodernist thought claims that the horrors of the Gulags and Concentration camps can be traced to the philosophical notion that we can explain the world using objective, total systems-and that such systems should be used to order society. Postmodernism is a philosophical movement reacting to and against modernism. Key theorists would be Kant, Marx, Hume, off the top of my head. Descartes can be seen as someone who partly bridges the gap as he has contributed much to philosophical-scientific thought while still maintaining religious dualism. It should be seen as a reaction to preceding, religiously focussed philosphical expressions such as those of Augustine, Aquinas, Spinoza. Its key tenets are a prioritisation of scientific rationality, a general acceptance of atheism, or at least the idea that philosophical inquiry should be rational and logical rather than spiritual, and an attempt to understand the world through the construction of systems and concepts that attempt to explain it objectively and in its totality. Modernism is generally a term used to describe philosophical expressions which emerged from the enlightenment.
